You’ve heard the saying, “When your feet hurt, you hurt all over?” Considering our feet carry our entire body weight throughout day, that saying isn’t far from the truth.  Painful feet can severely alter your quality of life.  Foot care is largely ignored in our society.  Massage therapy can calm aching feet (depending upon the reason they’re aching), and can help relieve pain caused from some common foot conditions.

Causes of Foot Pain / Injury

There are three main causes of foot pain: 1) shoes that do not fit properly, 2) some medical conditions, and 3) high-impact exercises.

For excellent information on foot pain and many of its causes, I encourage you to read the articleFoot Pain from the Mayo Clinic.  Any type of overuse can aggravate foot problems, including standing for too long. One of the many foot ailments the article addresses is interdigital neuroma (Morton’s neuroma), wherein it states: “Morton’s neuroma is aggravated by prolonged standing, and relieved by removal of the shoes and forefoot massage.

Women suffer far more from this type of pain than men because of constant shoe fad “fashions” touting either very high heels (which are lethal to the foot structure), pointed toes (wearing of which, over time, are guaranteed to cause painful bunions), or something completely flat with no support whatsoever. Wearing ill-fitting shoes (over time) can cause serious damage to your feet and even eventual malformation of the bone structure.

Massage Therapy for Foot Pain / Injury: More Information

An article in the online publication, Massage Today, addresses a very common foot problem (plantar fasciitis) called: Deep Tissue Massage Helps Plantar Fasciitis, wherein it states: “deep massage of the posterior calf combined with stretching may improve the function of patients with plantar fasciitis more than a combination of ultrasound and stretching. Ten minutes of deep pressure massage to the posterior calf easily fits into most therapeutic massage sessions and may be worth a try with your clients.”

Another article discussing plantar fasciitis, in American Family Physician, entitled, Diagnosis and Treatment of Plantar Fasciitis, states, “Conservative treatments help with the disabling pain. Initially, patient-directed treatments consisting of rest, activity modification, ice, massage, oral analgesics, and stretching techniques can be tried for several weeks.”

Massage Therapy Can Relieve Foot Pain

Massage therapy can relieve certain types of foot pain.  As always, first see your physician for a diagnosis to rule out serious heath conditions, and/or the possibility of sprains or fractures.  Massage therapy along with wearing properly fitting shoes can greatly relieve several types of foot conditions.
