Knee Pain / Injury
Do you suffer from knee pain / injury? Mike Gibbons, LMT, has massage therapy treatments specific to knee pain / injury.
Knee pain is a common complaint among young and older people alike. It can have a large impact on your life whether you’re carrying out daily activities or participating in strenuous events. It can make it difficult to hike, participate in sports, or even climb and descend stairs. There are instances in which massage therapy can relieve pain in the knees, e.g. aiding in the healing process of a knee injury, and some arthritic conditions.
Causes of Knee Pain
There are many causes of pain in the knee area. It can result from injury (torn ligaments, torn meniscus, and patellar tendinitis). If you have injured your knee, or have severe ongoing unexplained pain in your knee(s), please see your physician immediately to determine the first course of action. Knee pain can arise from overuse, mechanical problems (such as a dislocated knee cap) or later in life from an old sports injury. Chronic pain in the knee area can also be caused by various arthritic conditions, a few of which are: osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and gout. Another unappreciated reason for knee area pain is a misalignment of the pelvis/hip, down to the ankle/foot.
Massage Therapy for Knee Pain / Injury: More Information
A research article from PLOS|One, entitled, Massage Therapy for Osteoarthritis of the Knee: A Randomized Dose-Finding Trial, concludes the following: “Given the superior convenience of a once-weekly protocol, cost savings, and consistency with a typical real-world massage protocol, the 60-minute once weekly dose was determined to be optimal, establishing a standard for future trials.”
In the online publication, WebMD, an excerpt from an article entitled, Massage May Help Knee Osteoarthritis, reads, “Massage may cut the pain and improve function if you have knee osteoarthritis, a new study shows. … ‘Massage therapy seems to be efficacious in the treatment of OA (osteoarthritis) of the knee,’ write the researchers.”
The Institute for Integrative Healthcare also praises massage therapy as a remedy for pain in the knee area in their article entitled, Massage Therapy: A Knee Surgery Ally, stating, “While great care is warranted in addressing a postoperative knee, massage therapy that is gentle and properly applied can be of great benefit,” in certain aspects of aiding in the healing process.
