Low Back Pain / Injury
Do you suffer from low back pain? Mike Gibbons, LMT, has massage therapy treatments specific to low back pain / injury.
Many, many people suffer from low back pain. I know from personal experience that back pain can severely impact your quality of life. People seek out massage therapy for back pain as a means of pain reduction, along with feeling the need to reduce (or eliminate altogether) drugs that may become harmful if taken over a long period of time. Massage therapy can be very effective for lower back pain in that it can loosen that “locked,” rigid, painful feeling and help to keep the muscles and surrounding fascia more supple and able to move more freely.
Causes of Low Back Pain
Much of pain in the lower back area can be attributed to overuse, muscle strain, herniated discs, poor posture, and stress. Chronic back pain can actually change the manner in which we move in that we tend to favor certain positions for sitting, standing, driving, and sleeping. After a time, it can even affect the way we walk, and actually cause an imbalance in the spinal structure itself. Arthritic conditions can also be present, which can magnify the pain.
Massage Therapy for Low Back Pain: More Information
More and more studies are telling us that massage is good therapy for back pain:
The following: Massage Helps Treat Low Back Pain: Researches Say Massage Provides Pain Relief and improves Daily Functioning, from an article on WebMD by Brenda Goodman, MA (reviewed by Louise Chang, MD), states that “Massage may be serious medicine, at least when it comes to treating persistent pain in the lower back.”
In Medscape, an article entitled, Effectiveness of Massage Therapy for Chronic, Non-malignant Pain: A Review, it states that “Existing research provides fairly robust support for the analgesic effects of massage for non-specific low back pain.”
Massage Therapy Can Bring Relief to Low Back Pain Sufferers
Most lower back pain can be relieved by a combination of massage therapy, gentle exercise and education. Learning the best ways to move, keeping your body hydrated, utilizing massage therapy, and improving your sitting and standing posture can have a very positive effect on pain in the lower back over the long term.
